The Amazing Story of Ginny the Elephant (Warning: Get Kleenex!)

Once upon a time, I took my group of animal communication students to the San Antonio Zoo.

His instructions were to wander around and find animal teachers to practice communication for about an hour. Then we would all meet up at the elephant enclosure because there was a very special elephant there named Ginny that I wanted to introduce you to. She also wanted to tell you an amazing elephant story: Ginny’s story.

They had learned how to better connect and open up the conversation. Some of the students, being very sensitive and empathetic like me, were concerned.

What if the animal’s story was heartbreaking? What if they were hurt, angry, grieving or sad…? What if their misery was more than they could bear?

Oh.

I understood your concerns. I have felt them myself, and have often been told by students that they were afraid to work with rescued, abused, or sick animals in transition…for the same reasons.

But here’s the thing…

Whatever is happening to you or has happened to the animal is part of its history. What they need is the ability to communicate and be heard so they can heal and let go.

It’s not your job to take over their stuff when you open a channel to communicate.

Your job is to give them a way to be understood, to feel loving and compassionate care, to create a heart-centered space to listen and care, and THAT is such a precious gift.

Many times healing happens, positive changes happen that were unexpected, and right before your eyes (if you do it right), you can see them become more present, heal, grow, breathe a big sigh of relief and let go of the past.

It is a miracle to witness, and moving beyond belief.

So, with Kleenex in their pockets, hearts open and available, with loving and clear intention, they went!

When we returned to the elephant enclosure later, they were delighted with their experiences. Some animals ignored them, they were too lost in their own world and not interested in talking to a human.

Other animals were so grateful to have been heard that they were excited and delighted.

They said things like, “Wait, did you say something? Can you, a dense human, hear me? That can’t be right… I thought humans were too mindless to communicate. Seriously, are you really talking to ME? And can you hear me too? OMG! Let me go find my friends!

And other animals would come running eager to witness the miracle of a human who could hear them and speak their language.

Very funny!! And the stories they told? Oh my.

comforting! inspiring! Touching! wow.

Today I have another story to tell you.

A few weeks earlier, a docent at the zoo called me to help them with one of their elephants.

Ginny, the 50-year-old matriarch of the small herd of elephants at the zoo, had killed her main keeper.

No one else had been there when it happened, so there were no witnesses. Only the evidence of the carnage remained.

When I arrived, they had her chained up, in a metal cage barely big enough for her body. She stood there, dejected but proud, calm and withdrawn. Resigned and waiting for her fate to be determined.

The keepers and management hadn’t decided if they would have to kill her or not.

Why had he become rebellious?

Was it dangerous?

Would it hurt someone else?

What happened for her to have killed that man?

Before they decided what to do with her, they wanted me to talk to her and find out exactly what happened.

So I walked in and found all the humans sitting in a circle waiting for me. I greeted them, sat down and took my place.

I only had a moment to say hello to Ginny, whom I had never seen before, and assure her that I intended to be her voice and that I really cared about what happened to her.

I wasn’t given any more information than you know at this point, so I closed my eyes and tuned in to Ginny, asking her to tell me what happened.

She told me that the man often abused her and her family pack. That he hadn’t been there for long, but he was neither loved nor despised. That he often showed up reeking of alcohol and acting weirdly, unpredictably.

That fateful day he decided that he had had enough. She had hurt and terrified them long enough.

It was her job as a matriarch to protect her family, so she made the difficult decision and acted.

She just calmly walked up to him, grabbed him around the waist, lifted him up and held him up, flipped him over and slammed his head on the ground hard enough to split his skull open.

And that was it.

She took a deep breath and I thanked her for telling me.

I conveyed his story to the people present.

They had tears in their eyes as they listened, and then they looked at each other.

They told me yes, he abused and yes, he often got drunk. Nobody liked it. Nobody killed him.

They asked me what Ginny’s intentions were towards the rest of them…would it hurt them if they let her go?

When I asked, Ginny said, “No, you are all kind and warm-hearted people. I don’t mean to hurt you. I just want my family to be safe and respected.”

With a few more reassurances from her that they were indeed safe, they eagerly released her chains, opened the cage, and let her free.

We all had tears in our eyes as she reached out to thank those closest to her with a gentle touch of her trunk.

The look in his eyes… well, I cry just honestly remembering it.

And so she continued as the matriarch of the pack. She never hurt anyone else.

That brings us back to where we started… It was only a few weeks later when I was at the zoo with my students.

After the students finished their conversations with the animals, we all agreed to reconnect in the elephant enclosure.

We were at the other end of the room sitting on a bench in the shade. We chatted about our extraordinary experiences.

Then… I saw Ginny at the opposite end of the room, away from us.

She had been eating alone away from the crowds.

But suddenly, she went very still… and stopped chewing.

She raised her head, then looked across the room at us, her ears pricking up in excitement.

Then he bent down and scooped a big stack of hay into his trunk and carried it as he walked all the way…

And then it stopped, right in front of us!

When he looked at us, he dropped the hay and began to chew.

He greeted us warmly, welcoming us into his home. She answered many of our questions and the students were delighted to hear her sweet and kind voice.

Suddenly one of the elephant keepers came running towards us in alarm.

They said, “What are you doing to that elephant!? She never pays attention to tourists and zoo visitors. Why is she interested in you?”

So we told him the story, and as soon as he knew who I was, he wanted to shake my hand, hugging me. With tears in her eyes she thanked me profusely for my help in saving Ginny’s life.

And that’s why I do the work I do.

It makes the difference.
