How to improve your home decor with wall shelves

One of the most common complaints homeowners have is that they don’t have enough space in their rooms. Well, one way to add storage space to your home is to install wall shelves on an empty wall. Although wall shelves are simple pieces of furniture, they cannot support very heavy weights. So why are you buying a wall shelf? What kind of items do you need to store?

The most important part of a shelf is the large flat board that supports the items that are stored on it. If you plan to store your CDs in it, then a six-inch-wide shelf should do the trick. For books, a width of nine to twelve inches should be fine. However, if you plan to put your clothing or reasonably large souvenirs, twelve inches should be enough, but it really depends on the size of the items. Regardless of the type of shelf you plan to use, the width should depend on the largest item(s) it will hold.

You can buy ready-made shelves at any DIY store. Made of particle board with laminate or wood veneer, they come pre-finished and all you need to do is install them. They do not need sanding or painting and you choose from the standard units that are sold.

Many of you may like to build a shelf instead of buying it from a store. You can buy boards at a lumberyard and cut them, or have them cut for you, to your desired length. Although it is cheaper to buy boards, building shelves this way is a lot of work.

These are the three basic types of wall shelving you can consider.

1. Adjustable: The most common adjustable types consist of metal guides that can be screwed directly into the wall. Shelves are located through them.

two. Support: This is the simplest type. Here the brackets are screwed to the wall and the shelf rests on these brackets.

3. Floating: These have a minimalist look. They are fixed to the wall with fixings that are hidden by the shelf itself.

If you want to give your bathroom a utilitarian look, you can install an adjustable shelf to make the most of the area. Wall shelves add a clean look to your home decor and really declutter.
