Bajans and Cricket: A Love Story, But They Hate the Rain!

one. Bajans are peace loving. I live in bustling St Lawrence Gap. I hear noise from the street, for sure. Goal I never hearing screams or witnessing violence. Never.

two. Bajans love cricket. This is such a classy sport, the way they break for tea and all. Gary sober (mister Gary Sobers) is a national hero. Children start playing cricket at a very young age, and when they grow up, they become as fanatic as Americans with their ridiculous and violent game of football.

3. No one is exempt from the slow service that Bajan waiters provide. It’s not about you, not about you being white, tourist, or “ugly” American, or anything else. Enjoy the rhythm… yes, I know it’s not easy being Type A in a Type B culture. However, once you get used to it, you’ll see that it’s good for your health.

Four. Bajan bartenders won’t bring a check until you ask for it.. At the end of his meal, he doesn’t sit around smoking because he didn’t get a check; order it now His waitress is not being negligent; he/she just doesn’t want to rush you.

5. Bajans hate the rain. This tickles the old Saint Francis in me! Although the rains in Barbados come, and then go, very quickly, even the inhabitants of Baja in the sea (um, where it is wet) leave the sea to seek shelter. Outdoor concerts come to a halt as patrons spread out for cover. The streets empty as people crowd under the overhangs… even those with umbrellas.

Characteristics of the Bajans… One More!

Bajans are blunt. My husband hadn’t been to see his 94-year-old father in a while, so we stopped by his father’s house the other day to say hi. Joyce, her dad’s nurse, loved by the whole family, told Greg that she was getting fat. No judgment; she simply called it as she saw it. Hey, this has happened to me too.

Okay, that’s 11, not 10, fun things to know about Bajans. Perhaps I am generous in my old age. Which is actually one of the 12 fun things to know about Bajans: Bajans are generous. Namely, a very recent example: When my husband and I returned home from St. Lucia last week, we were delighted to discover that, as a gift, our housekeeper had come and tidied up our house for our arrival. Oh thanks, Monica!
