Yard waste recycling: what to do with your surplus green waste?

Every home or commercial gardener knows how difficult it can sometimes be to compost all the garden waste materials that have accumulated over a season or even years.

In New Zealand especially, it’s hard to keep up with home composting in urban areas like Auckland, as plants grow 365 days a year and garden waste will only take up usable space on your property.

So what can we do if we have excess yard waste without necessarily dumping it in our landfills and causing environmental damage?

Actually, mentioning the latter, a lot of organic waste is disposed of in valuable landfills. This can lead to running out of landfill space in the future.

Another concern is the fact that green waste is not naturally composted in landfills, for the reason that it does not accumulate in a proper compost heap, rather green waste materials often get trapped in plastic bags. That leads to a release of, for example, methane gas and other harmful gases that can have a negative effect on our environment in too high concentrations.

To avoid the problem of organic waste “going to waste” in our landfills, it is advisable to professionally recycle yard waste at larger composting sites that have the equipment to handle large amounts of green waste. At these special sites, yard waste is naturally processed into nutrient-rich compost. Nothing will go to waste in landfills; everything is recycled and can be reused as a great garden product.

If you have a surplus of organic waste in your home yard or are dealing with yard waste commercially, you can always have your green waste picked up by a local yard waste collection company.

They will provide you with a green wheelie bin (often 240L volume) or garden bag (in different sizes) or even rubbish bins (often measured in m3 capacity as a one time disposal of yard waste) to fill for collection.

The green waste collection service will then take the load to an approved composting site in your area, where everything is processed in an environmentally friendly manner.

Another good thing about recycling green waste is that it literally doesn’t cost the earth.

You can always search the internet for green waste collection companies in your area using the following keyword examples: yard bins [your town/city]garden bags [your town/city]green waste collection service, garden waste removal.
