Turkey hunting is a safe outdoor activity that is gaining popularity across the country. It is essential to learn and practice safe hunting techniques and to obey and support all wildlife laws. Hunter safety education and training programs are available in abundance.

Always be perfectly directed. Select an open place. Avoid wearing white, red, black, or blue hunting suits. Camouflaging yourself and your weapon, eliminating movements and bird calls are proven turkey hunting strategies that pay off. Never salute to alert a fellow hunter, but yell loud and clear. Be wise and precise while mimicking the voice of the eater of turkeys or other birds to get their attention. Voice or tube calls are recommended. Also available are box calls that provide very realistic and clear calls.

When the bird suddenly goes silent, it means that another hunter is targeting your prey. But never hinder the other hunters, share the great outdoors with them. A clear field view is essential for a smooth search.

Death traps and lures are widely used now which increase the chances of success and danger. Always keep such lures properly covered while the target places the lures at least 20 yards from the line position. Also follow safety measures when handling firearms. It is also important to accurately judge the distance between the hunter and the target. A hunter should be able to determine when a turkey is close enough to the target. Shotguns with 10-20 gauges are available for turkey hunting and offer a good option for hunters.

It is mandatory to enter each turkey on the official application form, certifying that the hunt was carried out by legal means and not for commercial interest. It is equally important to obtain the permission of the respective owners before hunting.
