Three qualities of good CD packaging design

The current tech-savvy generation may think that media disks are out of date, but the truth is that it would be difficult to find a suitable alternative media storage. What’s more, disks provide a truly durable way to store data compared to hard drives or even online storage; Damage to your computer and faulty Internet services will not cause you to lose information stored on a disk. However, durability is not the only reason people still use CDs and DVDs. One of the most important features that you cannot get when downloading media is the design of the CD package itself.

For artists designing CD packaging, there are basically three things a CD package must have to qualify as an exceptional design:

Proper Disc Protection – The primary function of CD cases and packaging is to protect the disc it contains. As such, CD case designers must prioritize functionality over design. However, this does not mean that you should give up creativity and just create something purely utilitarian; you can actually still create any layout you want, just always make sure the layout doesn’t defeat the purpose of the CD package in the end. . In addition to ensuring adequate protection, designers must also ensure that CD cases are really easy to open. If a person cannot easily remove or return a disc, they will probably not use it again.

Attention-grabbing graphics or design: People these days tend to download music and other media files over the Internet; after all, it is the content they want. Also, if the packaging isn’t attractive or memorable, there’s really no incentive to buy a CD or DVD (except, of course, for durable storage). The unique and highly creative packaging gives people a reason to go out of their way to buy a multimedia drive because this is something you can’t get with a download. For those who use CDs as marketing material, design can also play a role in the success of the campaign; Most people will be more than eager to check the contents of an interestingly designed CD, while poorly designed CDs will likely be forgotten, or worse, thrown away without being scanned.

Environmentally Friendly – Besides convenience, one of the reasons people prefer to download media these days is that it doesn’t require manufacturing processes that can harm the environment. Also, if a CD is not used, people may choose to throw it away and replace it with a digital copy downloaded online, creating more garbage. Mother Nature is already suffering from various problems related to pollution, so the best thing that CD designers can do is to employ eco-friendly measures for CD packages, such as soy-based inks and recycled materials.
