Ferrets can make great pets. But they can create a lot of mess if not tamed properly. Therefore, one should train a pet ferret to use a litter box to eliminate, just like a cat.

Before your ferret pet has been housebroken, make sure you don’t let him run around the house for fear of making a mess in the house. A ferret can be made to use a litter box almost 75% of the time, but for this your training will have to be strict. In addition, you will need to show a lot of perseverance in this case. In any case, don’t be surprised if you find a little mess in some corner of your house, even after your ferret has been housebroken. A ferret’s obedience in this case will depend on how well and for how long you train it.

The key to training a ferret is patience. You have to give your ferret an immense amount of time to understand that eliminating anywhere in the house is wrong, and that the only place it can eliminate is in the litter box. But there is no standard time frame in which a ferret can be domesticated. The training period can extend from a few weeks to even a few months.

One of the effective ways to get a ferret to start using the litter box is to allow him to run around a small room, possibly the bathroom, before he eliminates. Another important aspect of training a ferret is learning when a ferret needs to use the litter box. Like any other animal, ferrets will need to relieve themselves shortly after waking up from a nap or after eating. Therefore, you will do well to take a precautionary measure and put the ferret inside its litter box right after these two activities.

You may have to be a bit harsh and firm with your pet. Don’t let the ferret out of the litter box before it has finished with its chores. While training a ferret, giving him a treat as soon as his work in the litter box is done is a good way to educate the pet.

While the ferret is being housebroken, or even after that, there may be some incidents where he hasn’t used the litter box. Do not punish the animal in such a case. Physically punishing the ferret will strike your fear into its heart and may emotionally move the animal away from you, instead of bringing the two of you closer together.
