Six reasons why your cat vomits and what you can do

When a cat vomits, it can be normal or it can indicate a problem. How can you know which one it is?

Let’s explore the reason a cat vomits in the first place.

  1. Cats groom themselves regularly, eating as they go. The normal way they get rid of this is by throwing up hairballs. This is normal and natural. And the vomit looks like a little wet packet the color of his fur.
  2. A cat often vomits after eating grass. They will vomit saliva (or food if they ate immediately after eating the grass). This is a natural form of cleaning that your cat has, it is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about, if it happens occasionally. The vomit will be just saliva with blades of grass.
  3. Vomiting in food poisoning is the normal way to rid the system of something unwanted in the stomach. In an acute situation, this is usually over in a matter of hours or days, if the cat managed to solve the problem. The vomit will be the food you recently ate.
  4. Vomiting, along with diarrhea and skin rashes, is the body’s best way of ridding itself of toxins. Toxic preservatives in commercial pet foods will make your cat very toxic. The constant vomiting is helping your cat get rid of some of the overload.
  5. Vomiting can also mean your cat may have a health issue and the last thing she needs is the burden of digestion. Digestion requires a lot of energy and if your cat is dealing with a health problem, digestion would divert too much energy from the task at hand. So they throw the food away, to allow all their extra energy to focus on the problem.
  6. When a cat is switched from a commercial pet food to a quality raw food, vomiting is likely to occur initially for a short period of time. This is a normal cleaning and should be left.

A healthy cat will be able to deal with most situations, so careful monitoring is the best thing to do in the early stages, if nothing sinister, such as rat poisoning, is suspected.

If your cat’s immune system is severely low, she may not be able to deal with the problem and therefore last long enough to worry about the possibility of dehydration and underfeeding.

Cats need good quality food. Unfortunately, most cats have to subsist on poor quality commercial cat food that comes in a package or can. This is the most likely reason your cat is vomiting.

If you switch your cat’s food to a healthy diet of raw meat and bones, chronic vomiting will likely stop, allowing for the initial detoxification period.

Guided by what your cat vomits, you can arrive at the logical problem, and thus solve it.
