As we have seen through the reintroduction of Bell Bottoms, Tweed and Danskins, fashions are cyclical and anything is possible. A fad that has long been forgotten by the mainstream is making a comeback from the history books. Jean Paul Gaultier, the famed designer who introduced men’s skirts in the ’80s and produced suits for Madonna in the ’90s, including her cone bra for the Blond Ambition Tour, is now setting his sights on a men’s fashion, the panties A fly is a pouch that is attached to the front of men’s pants to accentuate the genitals. It was widely used by European men during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Even in a time before basketball players and porn stars, insecurity-driven European men wore panties to provide the effect of having larger genitalia.

But Gaultier is looking to change that in a big way. “Panties are so much fun! The last time I saw him wear a fly was Freddy Mercury. Everyone should wear one. Let’s flaunt genitalia like it’s 1552!” Gautier yelled. “I’m surprised this trend has never caught on with Asian men,” Gaultier laughed. His announcement came just after the annual Paris Fashion Week. “I’m ready to take the fashion world by storm once again. I won’t rest until codpieces are on everyone’s mind. This decade we’re going medieval… a little bit naughty,” Gaultier said. It plans to start production of the shorts next month at its Paris factory and will have them in stores across the U.S. by fall 2011. Justin Bieber’s agent has been called in for Bieber to become the boy. cover of Gaultier’s latest creation.
