Grow Your Downline: How Your Upline May Be Sabotaging You

Did you go into a network marketing business believing that it was a business that would virtually build itself and that you would be able to grow your downline almost like magic? Were they led to believe that if he let his upline “help” him, he would grow his downline in no time?

The truth is that much of the “help” people receive from their uplines is actually sabotaging their success. Before you think I’m saying these people are trying to sabotage you on purpose, they’re not. Of course, it’s good for your upline if you succeed and grow your downline big time.

However, the truth is that much of what people are learning and allowing their uplines to do to “help” them is actually hurting them (and not helping you grow your downline). Here are the top three ways your upline may be sabotaging you (and the kind of “help” from your upline you want to AVOID at all costs):

1. Teaching Bad Marketing Strategies – One of the biggest and most pervasive things that uplines (and businesses) teach people is the idea that your only group of potential customers should be your friends, family, neighbors, and peers. of work. However, approaching these people as your only potential customers is a poor marketing strategy for several reasons.

One, they comprise a very small number of potential customers (relatively speaking). Even if you know “a lot of people”, you need to have a continuous stream of new leads coming to you every day in order to massively grow your downline. Second, the chances of this group staying in your downline and consuming the products (or wanting to build the business) in the long run are very small. Which means your retention rates for these types of leads are pretty low. Third, these potential customers are not the best, meaning they are much less likely to be motivated to join your business because they were looking for the benefits your product offers, and more likely to want to help you. This is not the basis on which you can grow your downline.

2. Promoting the company instead of you: The second main way your upline may be sabotaging you is by telling you (and teaching you) that the way to grow your downline is to promote the company and the business opportunity. Leading with the company or the opportunity is always a mistake. The way to generate lots of good, targeted leads is to position yourself as an expert who has a solution to a particular problem. The type of leads you want to generate are people who are looking for the benefits your product provides and who will be interested in consuming the product you are marketing. They are the people who will not only join your business (and by extension grow your downline), but will be loyal to you and your product.

3. Position yourself as a leader and expert: How many of you have your upline suggested that when you have new potential prospects, you refer them to a 3-way call that will be arranged by them (not you)? Or, has your upline offered to host any of the house or hotel parties you’ve hosted? Allowing your upline to do this will surely sabotage you and your ability to grow your downline. The best way to generate leads and get those leads into your business is to position YOURSELF as a leading expert in your niche and then develop a relationship and trust with your prospects. People will always buy from people, not from companies. Also, people will always buy from people they think they can trust. By letting your upline take the lead on 3-way calls and parties, you are telling your prospects that your upline, not you, are the experts.
