Electric Irons – Everything You Need to Know

Electric irons are a practical tool with a long history and some great contemporary developments. Let’s look at the history, options and applications of the modern electric griddle.

Originally, the irons were placed on a fire or coals to heat. They were then hollowed out with room for embers within the iron itself. Finally, electricity was added. The modern electric griddle features a heating element that evenly heats a nonstick metal soleplate.

Most modern electric irons also have a steam function. An internal water tank is heated by the same element that heats the sole. Steam options typically include different humidity levels (how much steam is given off), as well as mist and spray settings. The advancement of the internal heating mechanism also allows for more specific control of temperature settings. Some newer models even have a digital temperature readout, while others allow the user to choose settings not based on degrees, but on the type of fabric.

Electric iron safety features include automatic shutoff (general use time or tummy time), nonstick soleplates, retractable cords, insulated cords, heat shields, and more.

Irons come in standard home models (used by most people for clothing and draperies), professional models (more powerful, used by seamstresses and tailors), and travel irons (smaller, less powerful, and lighter for easier transport).

The reliability of electric irons allows them to be used in other ways as well. People use the steam function of electric irons to serve as garment steamers on hangers or curtains and drapes still hanging on the window. An iron can also be used (with care and proper technique) to steam rugs and remove candle wax from rugs and tablecloths.

Artisans use electric irons to melt special beads into solid shapes, press flowers, apply T-shirt designs, and more. Craft-specific will come in sizes and with surfaces and features designed specifically for craft work (especially sewing).

The cost of a modern electric iron ranges from $10 to $300. Travel irons are the most affordable and professional irons are the most expensive. For home use, an iron that costs $40 is usually sufficient.
