Thirteen authors who are also experts in the area of sex addiction have teamed up to write “Mending a Broken Heart: A Guide for Couples of Sex Addicts.” Each one has written with a clarity that is not only educational but also inspiring for those who are stuck in an extremely difficult situation related to sex addiction.

The book is divided into two sections. The first is for couples addicted to sex and the second for specific situations.

Beginning with a chapter defining sex addiction, the book goes on to discuss the importance of proper disclosure by the addict that will reduce pain and hopefully lead to building trust and honesty in the future.

Couples of sex addicts often have more questions than answers, and the authors address several including whether things will get better, how to decide whether to stay in the relationship or leave. They also address the couple’s sexuality, keeping each other safe, setting boundaries, and making sure self-care is practiced.

One chapter describes the strengths that can be found through a twelve-step program.

In the second part of the book, which deals with specific situations, family issues are addressed, such as how to share information with the couple’s children. An entire chapter focuses on situations where the addict is attracted to underage children. Topics related to infidelity and sex addiction in gay couples are included, as well as the topic “Is my partner gay?”

The last two chapters of the book are about leaving the relationship and staying in the relationship. Each of them offers strategies that will help people make healthy choices.

“The Twelve Steps of Sex Addicts Anonymous,” a Resource Guide to organizations and scholarships that support those in recovery, as well as a seven-page Recommended Reading list can be found at the end of the book.

Contributing authors to Mending a Broken Heart offer honest and helpful strategies that are valuable to couples of sex addicts and therapists alike. Stephanie Carnes has done an excellent job editing the book.

Finding out that someone you love has been secretly involved in activities can be very traumatic and confusing. This book provides not only support, but also wisdom for those who are unsure of what to do or how to get back on their feet. The information is clear and the advice is full of wisdom.

I highly recommend this book for those who are struggling and those who want to help them.
