Avatar makeup tutorial with airbrush makeup

The Avatar movie was an absolute sensation, the graphics were amazing and the world they created was just magical. Sure, this will mean a lot of merchandising, but the most fun will be all the Na’Vi-inspired looks that will come out at costume parties, and especially on Halloween. This Avatar makeup tutorial should give you the basics on how to get a great Na’Vi look for that next costume party, or just for fun.

The first thing to do is get some great pictures to inspire you, facial close-ups are essential. Every Avatar makeup tutorial will tell you that Na’Vi’s underlying look is actually a cat. So this means big eyes, wide eyed nose, and that kitty nose (fangs are an option too, like they had in the movie).

So to start your Avatar makeup tutorial, you’ll need to get a nice white base on your face, especially if you have a darker skin tone, as white will really make blue stand out as a true color. The base color of the Na’Vi is actually quite baby blue, so using a baby blue color covers your entire face over the white (don’t forget to blend down to the neck and ears, anywhere that shows). Next you need to outline the nose so that it appears wider at the top. This is done by simply taking a darker shade of blue and shading a line out from the corner of the eye to the nostrils.

Each Avatar makeup tutorial will use different coloring products, so it’s up to you whether you want to use a cream color, powder, or even have fun with airbrushing (this will definitely be the quickest option). Using home airbrushing kits like those from Dinair can really allow you to get creative with your Na’Vi look as they have a wide variety of colors available and will provide the most authentic skin tone.

The next step in this Avatar makeup tutorial is to put on the darker marks. Now, each Na’Vi person has individual markings, so he can make them up, but the key is to make each side of the face symmetrical; Thinking of the lines of a tiger won’t hurt either.

In this Avatar makeup tutorial, I’ll recommend using an angled brush with a dark blue powder to draw the outlines, then fill them in when I’m happy; using the Dinair airbrush would be great for this step. Once this is done, use a blue color with a hint of plum for the lips and a more purple color to outline the nose (cat style) to give the illusion of a smaller tip. Large eyes are essential, so lining the bottom line of the water with white will help give the illusion of larger eyes. If you have yellow contact lenses this will complete to look good.

The last step in this Avatar makeup tutorial is to apply the luminescent dots that all Na’Vi have. These are relatively randomly placed, so take some white pigment and give yourself a pinch of these luminous dots.

To make everything work perfectly, a long black wig with a Native American hairstyle will be the final touch to recreate an authentic Na’Vi look.
