Are you a Monday night sucker with your NFL picks?

Monday night football.

These three words have caused more lost bets, bad beats, and broken homes than any other word in the history of the National Football League! I know how exciting it is to bet on “the big game.” Everyone is watching, and it’s fun and exciting to get in on the action. It’s on national television, after all.

But what you don’t realize is that punters really nail these games, down to the last decimal point. Smart bettors look for value: they don’t blindly follow the crowd or bet just for fun. The smart money is more likely to be in the Carolina/Cleveland game early on Sunday than it is on Monday Night Football.

Take a look at some of the terrible bad beats in Monday night games in recent years. Just in 2009, the Falcons scored several times late in the fourth quarter and recovered an onside kick to lose by 8 to the New Orleans Saints, when the difference had opened to 8.5! Or the first game of the kickoff double header when New England recovered a fumble on kickoff to beat Buffalo by 1 (imagine having a Buffalo money line in that game!)

How about the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night? They recovered onside kicks, intercepted balls they should never have thrown, overcame big deficits and kicked 50-plus-yard field goals with no time to win these games. For some reason, Dallas seems to pull a lot of Monday Night Football games (wink, wink).

Sure, place a small “entertainment bet” on the next Monday night game, but don’t spend your bankroll on it!
