Anna Maria Island: How to Zip, Zoom and Explore the Island

Anna Maria Island, Fla. Is one of the great beach vacation destinations that most people have never heard of. The seven-mile island south of Tampa Bay does not allow luxury resorts or chain restaurants. However, there are many excellent privately owned tour companies that give the island a classic getaway feel. AMI is consistently one of the top-rated tourist destinations in Florida.

You can’t help but want to explore this unique relic of the past on a beach vacation. These are some of the excellent means of transportation to explore Anna Maria Island.

  • Free Anna Maria Island Trolley: AMI’s main street runs along Gulf Dr., East Bay Dr., and Pine Ave., with most shops, restaurants, and hotels located within a block or two. Free trolleys go up and down this street, picking up passengers every few blocks. As well as being a convenient source of public transportation for passengers of all ages, it’s a fun and fun way to take in island views on the road without having to worry about driving.
  • Beach Cruiser bike: The pedal is one of the most popular ways to get around the island. There are many bike lanes that allow you to safely navigate the entire AMI. However, during some of the hotter months, you can choose to use your bike to navigate to nearby beaches, shops, or restaurants.   • Scooter motor: Motorcycles are even more fun than they sound. Cruising at a modest speed of 25 to 35 mph is an ideal way to traverse this warm island paradise. With the wind in your hair and the sun shining everywhere, you can’t help but feel a strong connection to the island’s atmosphere.   • Electric car: Some are golf carts and some are far more exotic than anything you’ve ever seen on a golf course, but all electric carts are fun tools for transportation at AMI. Electric cars only require one charge when you’re not driving. They don’t have the horsepower of a gasoline car, but they do have enough power to keep up with most AMI traffic.   • Segway Human Transporter: At one point, the Segway was projected to revolutionize human transportation. Not quite, but they have found their place as a unique way to explore warm vacation destinations. AMI and Segways are a perfect match. With many great trails and back roads to explore, the Segway gives you an added thrill as you see spectacular beaches, palm trees, and turquoise waters in every direction.
  • Foot power: Most of Anna Maria Island’s great restaurants and shops are within walking distance. Whether you’re walking the streets of AMI or taking a walk on the beach, you can’t find a more beautiful place to stretch your legs.
  • Automotive: Lower the hood, roll down the windows, and experience the refreshing breeze from the Gulf of Mexico. Even if you choose to explore AMI in a traditional vehicle, you will find plenty of opportunities to get off the road and take in many of the breathtaking views from your car.
